# Leverage and Margin

## Leverage

Leverage multiplies your buying power. With 10x leverage:

* $100 of margin controls $1,000 of exposure
* Gains are amplified 10x
* Losses are also amplified 10x

***

## Margin

Margin is the collateral you provide to open a position.

#### Initial Margin

Amount required to open position.

#### Maintenance Margin

The minimum amount required to keep the position open. If your margin falls below this, liquidation occurs. Users can optionally add margin to open positions before this occurs.

***

## Liquidation

Liquidation occurs when losses approach your margin:

* Position is automatically closed
* Remaining margin is used to cover losses
* You may lose your entire margin

{% hint style="danger" %}
Warning: Higher leverage = higher liquidation risk. A 50x position can be liquidated by a very small price move against you.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.boba.xyz/perpetuals/leverage-and-margin.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
